Warren McGraw has spent about $12,000 to buy radio spots and have telephone calls made on behalf of his brother, state Attorney General Darrell McGraw.
In a filing with the Secretary of State’s office, Warren McGraw listed roughly $8,800 in expenditures on radio ads and $3,180 on automated phone calls. Filings also show that Warren McGraw spent $2,014.50 on newspaper advertising in Beckley for his older brother in September.
Darrell McGraw, the Democratic incumbent, is running against Charleston attorney Dan Greear in one of the most highly contested statewide races.

A new poll shows Sen. John McCain extending his lead over Barack Obama in West Virginia and headed for a victory in the Mountain State.
The survey from Public Policy Polling, done Wednesday and Thursday, shows McCain leading Obama 55 percent to 42 percent in West Virginia, up from the 50-42 margin the same company found two weeks ago.

West Virginia Chamber Takes on Dem AG McGraw

The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce is spending nearly $700,000 on a last-minute batch of television ads attacking Attorney General Darrell McGraw.
The group’s national counterpart provided about half the money for the negative ad campaign. The four-term Democrat has sued a number of U.S. chamber members over the years, alleging consumer protection and anti-trust violations.

On second thought, this shocking comment coming from Darrell McGraw really shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, this is the same guy who was named the biggest lawsuit abuser in the Lawsuit Happy State. Voters have a clear choice this election with Republican Dan Greear.

West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw has been named by a legal reform group as the state’s top lawsuit abuser in 2008.
As part of its Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week, Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse made the choice, calling it “indisputable.” Last year, they chose attorney Timothy Houston, who had filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s for putting cheese on a hamburger.
“McGraw’s seemingly pay-to-play deals with campaign contributors who rake in millions of dollars at public expense is a scandal,” said Steve Cohen, CALA’s executive director.

Ah the perks of incumbency. It is interesting to note that it’s not a state employee who’s trying to line up these taxpayer buys, but rather one of McGraw’s political operatives. Too cute by half. From the Dan Greear campaign:
Attorney General Candidate Dan Greear has demanded Darrell McGraw explain his planned use of taxpayer dollars to fund radio ads promoting a series of town hall meetings across the state dealing with gas price issues.
Greear asked the press corps to do their due diligence and follow-up with questions to the AG himself.
“We can’t find Darrell McGraw, or we’d ask him ourselves,” Greear said. “The Attorney General’s Office, through political consultant Amy Shuler Goodwin, has been attempting to purchase ads promoting a series of town hall meetings throughout the state on gas prices.”

Charleston, WV – Calling it the “clearest case of quid pro quo” to date, Attorney General Candidate Dan Greear demanded Darrell McGraw return tens of thousands of dollars in donations he received from lawyers awarded no-bid contingency fee contracts.
“It’s a disgusting practice,” Greear said. “Darrell McGraw awards secret, no-bid contingency fee contracts to lawyers and receives campaign contributions in return. The clearest case of this quid pro quo is the Atlanta Law Firm of Cook, Hall, and Lampros. Why would an Atlanta law firm pony up $10,000 in contributions if it isn’t a giveback of the taxpayer money McGraw secretly awarded them?”
Greear outraised McGraw during the current reporting period, $77,507 to $55,520. More than 95% of Greear for AG contributions came from in-state contributors.

Republican Dan Greear message is resonating with the voters in West Virginia tired of Democrat Attorney General Darrell McGraw.
From Greear’s Camp:
Attorney General Candidate Dan Greear said today he was pleased with a new poll featured in the State Journal by Orion Strategies that shows his campaign quickly closing the gap with current Attorney General Darrell McGraw.
An MBE poll taken September 5-8 showed Darrell McGraw leading by 17%.
Within three weeks, the Orion Strategies/West Virginia Wesleyan poll shows the margin has narrowed to 7% with Darrell McGraw polling 49% and Dan Greear at 41.5%.
“The poll we trust the most is when we are out campaigning and the overwhelming positive response we receive,” Greear said.
“While I believe this will be a close race, the momentum has shifted in the last few weeks in our favor.
As more and more people begin paying attention to our race, the more our numbers are going to climb.
People are sick and tired of Darrell McGraw and his antics and they are responding positively to our message of reform for the Office of Attorney General.”

WV: GOP AG Candidate Takes On Dem McGraw’s Outside Attorneys

During a Monday appearance before Gazette editors, Republican attorney general candidate Dan Greear said if elected, he would seek legislation spelling out when and how outside legal counsel should be hired by the attorney general’s office.
“Right now, there’s no transparency, no public input in hiring outside attorneys,” said Greear. “No legal justification is needed to hire them, and political donors often seem to be the attorneys who are hired.”
Greear, 39, who edged out Hiram Lewis to win the Republican nomination, said it should also be up to the Legislature, not the attorney general’s office, to decide how funds from class-action settlements are distributed.
