TN: Dem Senator Resigns After Record Fine By Registry Of Election Finance

Tennessee Democrat State Senator Jerry Cooper has not had a very good year. In addition to funneling nearly $100,000 from this campaign account for his personal use – he also blew a .18 and wrecked his car, he flipped his SUV 5 times, and was brought up on Federal fraud, it was land fraud, charges. He plead no contest on the .18, and was acquitted on the fraud charges – so he has that going for him…which is nice.

Embattled Sen. Jerry Cooper announced Monday that he plans to retire before the next election and that he will appeal the $120,000 fine — the largest in state history — the Registry of Election Finance levied against him last month.The Morrison Democrat, who has served in the Senate since 1984, ran afoul of state campaign finance laws when he funneled nearly $95,000 from his campaign coffers into a personal bank account, registry members have said.
