In New York…
In a shock to no one – former Clinton Administration H.U.D.
Secretary Andrew Cuomo handily beat back his two remaining opponents in last
night’s New York State Democrat Primary. Cuomo’s face off
against Republican nominee Jeanine Pirro,
a former D.A. and Judge will be THE high profile statewide race in New York
this year. Things to look for in the coming days and week – cash on
hand reports for both candidates, press and financial windfall for Pirro from
her upcoming Rudy Giuliani Gotham City fundraiser, tightening poll number
around mid-October.
Tightening poll numbers you say? Cuomo came out of the gate last
night swinging at Pirro.
Still,
Cuomo immediately started throwing stones in his victory speech, casting Pirro
as the hand-picked candidate of Gov. George Pataki and President Bush, both of
whom have registered low approval ratings in recent statewide polls.
“We
have learned too much and suffered too much to allow the reign of the two
Georges to continue,” he said
New York has never been a
great place for this President in polls – makes you wonder what Cuomo’s
afraid of…besides the high road.
…And
in Maryland
The ballot is set –
Republican candidate Scott Rolle, the
Frederick County State’s Attorney vs. Democrat candidate Doug Gansler,
the Montgomery County State’s Attorney. Gansler defeated former
Baltimore City State’s Attorney Stuart Simms 55%-43% in last night’s
primary. Rolle, who was unopposed, has what is acknowledged to be an
uphill trudge against the well funded Gansler. It will be interesting to
see where Gansler’s cash on hand stands after Tuesday’s
election. Rolle, you may recall, was recruited, and is constantly being
touted by Governor Bob Ehrlich and Lt. Governor Michael Steele. Rolle has
an impeccable record as prosecutor to run on and is already running a lively
campaign. He may benefit from a strong Ehrlich showing for Governor and
Steele showing for Senate.
Definitely a stay tuned
race.
