The Legislature will consider taking steps this morning toward hiring an independent counsel to investigate Minnesota Transportation Department policies and procedures before and after the Aug. 1 collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge.
Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Steve Murphy, DFL-Red Wing, will ask a Senate panel to commit to a $500,000 investigation of the agency.
As part of the investigation, a team of legal experts would examine everything from MnDOT inspections and decision-making to a $2 million contract for a consulting firm to assist a National Transportation Safety Board investigation of the deadly collapse.
