Republican Attorney General Phill
Kline debated his opponent Paul Morrison last night in Wichita.
The two
contenders in the campaign for state attorney general butted heads tonight over
crime and privacy in a Wichita debate, while a new poll shows the race is too
close to call.
Attorney
General Phill Kline and his opponent, Johnson County District Attorney Paul
Morrison, repeatedly accused each other of distorting records, backgrounds,
intentions and history itself.
This will be a one note race
until both campaigns go up on the air with a real TV buy geared towards winning
in November – not some tactical buys like Morrison has engaged in the
past week.
And the poll results –
Survey USA, widely used by TV stations across the country – released
results from their statewide campaign surveys showing A.G. Kline narrowly
leading Paul Morrison by 3% – 51%-48% with 2% undecided. Both sides will
spin these in their favor.
Kline: “Hey, we’ve been taking a
beating in the press for the 18 months and we’re still above 50% against
a guy whose base comprises a third of the vote. We couldn’t be
happier.”
Morrison: “Hey, we’re just in this race and
look – we’re only 3 point down against the incumbent.”
Reality: This poll automated – meaning your phone rings, your answer, you a recording, you press a few buttons, you hang up. The science behind
the survey is sound I’m certain – it's legit.
But, ask any of your pollster friends and they’ll tell you that automated
surveys tend to generate fewer undecided votes than those conducted by live
interviewers. It’s just human nature – it’s easier to
fudge your decision by pushing the number 3 on your key pad than it is talking
to a live person. I’d wager that the undecided vote in this race is
at least 15% – if not more – at this point.
At any rate – here’s
the survey – enjoy, read, share!
