to this, but N.J. Democrats have been known to switch horses ¾ through the

TRENTON
– With New Jersey's Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate under fire for his
business dealings, two top Republican lawmakers yesterday called on the
governor and Democratic leaders to advance a bill preventing last-minute
candidate swaps.

State
Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance wants Democrats who control the
Legislature to fast-track a bill that prohibits replacing a candidate less than
48 days before a general election, unless the candidate dies. Lance,
R-Hunterdon, first introduced the measure in 2004.

Lance
said he and Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce were renewing a call for
action amid rumors that Democrats have considered replacing U.S. Sen. Robert
Menendez, who is in a tightly contested race against Republican state Sen.
Thomas Kean Jr.

“This
makes it imperative that this bill be considered immediately,” Lance said.
