Charges and counter charges – must be candidate hunting season in
Arkansas.
Republican candidate Gunner
Delay says his Democrat foe Dustin McDaniel is lying to voters about his
record.
Republican
attorney general nominee Gunner DeLay accused Democratic nominee Dustin
McDaniel of lying about his support of a law to allow methamphetamine
manufacturers to reduce their sentences for good behavior…
…
DeLay cited a television interview McDaniel gave Sunday where McDaniel said he
didn't speak in favor of legislation introduced last year that could shorten
some meth manufacturers' prison terms. The legislation allows meth offenders
ordered to serve at least 70 percent of their sentences to earn meritorious
good time that could lower the mandatory time behind bars to 50 percent of
their sentences…
…
DeLay, at a news conference at the state capitol, showed reporters video of
McDaniel speaking in favor of the bill on the House floor last year.
In the
speech, McDaniel — who has said he supported the bill because it would
help with prison overcrowding — called the legislation a “common
sense” re-evaluation of the state's sentencing laws.
“If
you are voting for this bill for prison overcrowding I don't think I understand
that argument,” McDaniel said. “Because I fully agree that this
hasn't got a darn thing to do with prison overcrowding.”
The state Democratic Party attempted to parry Delay’s thrust by questioning
…DeLay's work as a registered lobbyist
for Medical Transportation Management, Inc., a St. Louis medical transportation
service company that was trying to win a state contract in 2003.
Kind of thin for the Democratic Party. Kind of sloppy for the
McDaniel campaign who when confronted with the video referenced above said: he was
sorry.
