House Republican Leader Michael Whalley
Whalley, 54, had been fighting a cancerous brain tumor.
As condolences pour in from Sens. John Sununu and Judd Greg, Whalley, a life-long Republican, was remembered by local colleagues from both sides of the aisle as a leader and a statesman.
“One of the great things about Mike was he was a friend as well as a political ally,” said former House Speaker Gene Chandler.
Whalley was deputy speaker while Chandler was speaker from 2001 until 2004.
