PIERRE — A measure that sought to open more government records to the public was defeated after an intense battle in this year’s South Dakota legislative session, but the debate likely will continue in future sessions.
“I’m going to keep working at it,” said state Sen. Nancy Turbak Berry, D-Watertown, the main sponsor of a bill that would have changed state law to presume that state and local government documents are open to the public.An analysis by a media lawyer found that the other 49 states already have laws that include some kind of presumption of openness for government documents.
