Here comes Democrat A.G. Jack Conway – going to fix the prison problem. For purely selfish purposes – we hope he spends a lot of time on this issue.
From a ‘sociological standpoint’ :
“I recognize that our current course is unsustainable,” Conway said. “It’s unsustainable from a sociological standpoint, and it’s unsustainable from a fiscal standpoint.”
A recent national survey found Kentucky’s prison population growing at the fastest rate in the nation.
Monday, Brown said that of the more than 22,000 state inmates, 73 percent are incarcerated for the least serious felonies, and most of them were not convicted of violent crimes or sex offenses.
Brown said he wants the council to come up with immediate steps that his department could take to better manage such nonviolent offenders as well as suggest long-range steps that may require changes in state law. His goal is for the group to have final recommendations by Dec. 1.
