CO: Ban On Strikes Close to Being Law

We’ve been following this issue and talking about the hazards of unionized “public servants” for some time. This Democrat bill gives the Democrat legislators and Democrat Governor a wilting fig leaf worth of political cover. A Republican sponsored bill would have provided for severe penalties if public employees went on strike. Not surprisingly, Democrats quashed that one. In its place they pass this bill – with “penalties” – if you can call them that – of $50 daily penalties for striking employees – that’ll stop em. It’s not like labor unions have hundreds of millions of dollars at their disposal for political activity – what’s a few hundred dollars to score more political points with members? Go on strike for a week, get fined $250 – get a raise that is far greater than the fine as a result of your illegal strike – see how it works?

DENVER – A proposed ban on state employees striking survived attacks from the right and the left Tuesday and now appears safely on its way to becoming law.Gov. Bill Ritter signed an executive order Nov. 2 allowing employee unions to enter into “partnerships” in which appointed representatives could bargain in nonbinding fashion with department heads over issues of concern to state workers. Ritter included a ban on strikes in the order, but Attorney General John Suthers said later that the order did not supersede state law that allows strikes.
