Experience on other issues across the country indicates that this will indeed open the door for other activity on this issue.
The Connecticut Catholic Conference fears that a bill before the General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee recognizing Massachusetts’ same-sex marriages opens the door to allowing gay matrimony in this state.State Rep. Michael Lawlor, D-East Haven, co-chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said Wednesday the purpose of the bill is to treat gay couples from Massachusetts, the only state that recognizes gay marriage, the same as those from states that offer civil unions, such as Vermont, New Hampshire and New Jersey. Under the bill, all legal partnerships between gay couples would be recognized as civil unions in Connecticut.
The Catholic conference doesn’t agree with that logic, according to Executive Director Michael C. Culhane.
Here in Massachusetts where gay marriage is the law the only thing that has changed is that gay & heterosexual couple have equal rights.
