When New Jersey police start deploying ammunition designed to subdue people, they will be able to use it under more circumstances than permitted for the use of deadly force, the state attorney general said Monday. However, they will not have to first use the so-called “less-lethal ammunition,” such as rubber bullets, if the situation permits the use of deadly force, Attorney General Anne Milgram said in a directive to law enforcement officers and county prosecutors.
The policy is the first of its kind for New Jersey.
Less-lethal ammunition can be used when such force is “reasonably necessary to prevent the person from causing death or serious bodily injury to him/herself, an officer, or any other person,” under Milgram’s policy.
