Texas Democrats have been fighting a year-and-a-half court battle over mail-in ballots. The case is scheduled to go to trial in May, and the outcome could affect how campaigns are waged in November. At issue are investigations of alleged voter fraud by Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office. Since 2005, Abbott’s office has aggressively prosecuted people on charges of illegally handling ballot applications and mail-in ballots that belonged to other voters.
The effort has yielded 10 convictions statewide, according to the attorney general’s office. It has also clashed with tradition in some minority communities, such as southeast Fort Worth, where activists have helped elderly and disabled voters with mail-in ballots for decades.
