We can only wish Carter’s announcement was in the same vein as that of New Yorks Mets phenom Sidd Finch. Man, that kid had a fastball.
Steve Carter’s announcement that he won’t seek re-election as Indiana attorney general took both parties by surprise, especially coming on Easter Sunday and well into the 2008 campaign. Carter’s decision may well add some excitement to the state Republican convention on June 2.The deadline to file for the May 6 primary passed weeks before March 23, when Carter announced he wasn’t running again. The attorney general, however, is nominated not in the primary but at the state party convention. To win the nomination, the successful candidate needs to win the votes of the majority of the 2,086 party convention delegates.
Carter’s late decision and announcement gives prospective candidates less than two months before the May 19 filing deadline to decide whether they want to make a career-changing decision, spend several weeks courting delegates and then wage a statewide campaign.
