GPS monitoring of sex offenders is an outstanding idea, and the Republican A.G. Troy King deserves mad kudos for spearheading this effort in Alabama. It would a gigantic disappointment if a higher level protection from sex predators fell through due to a contractual glitch.
Attorney General Troy King said Thursday that he is concerned Alabama could lose $600,000 in federal funding to help monitor sex offenders.
He said he has legal questions about the arrangement between the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles and a vendor it selected for the GPS monitoring program. He has requested documents from the board to review the situation.King, who said he had never seen a similar agreement during his time as attorney general, met with attorneys from the parole board late Wednesday about the situation. The board has until November to use the federal money, but has been unable to find a vendor after three unsuccessful bid process attempts.
