MD: Deal on Energy Off At Midnight

It’s hard to get a deal done when there are 188 very special interests that must be recognized and reckoned with. Rough.

By midnight tonight, Gov. Martin O’Malley must line up the necessary votes in the General Assembly to approve a $2 billion settlement he brokered with Constellation Energy Group or risk the deal’s collapse.State officials and Constellation, BGE’s parent company, reached a settlement two weeks ago to put an end to a dispute that’s been simmering since the company sought a 72 percent electricity rate increase in 2006. The deal would give consumers $170 rebates this year, plus other benefits in the future.

    This will be a nice litmus test to see how the Gov and his GA work together. Given his approval rating is sinking fast and he has done nothing to make MD any friendlier for big business – this will be an all or nothing deal, either making things incredibly worse or maybe, just a bit better. It’s all about his image and his future aspirations. He got into office by making energy an issue, let’s see if it gets him out of office – whether it be on the coat tails of Ms Clinton or one & done – only time will tell.
