Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has joined other leaders across the country in taking a stand against media consolidation, and we hope that Wisconsin congressional representatives — especially Van Hollen’s fellow Republicans — will join him in the struggle to maintain satellite radio competition.
In a letter to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin, Van Hollen argues that the proposed merger of the Sirius and XM networks would harm consumers and undermine the ideological and cultural discourse that is vital to democracy.
Van Hollen bluntly declares that the license transfer that would permit the merger of the two national networks is “bad for consumers and bad for competition.”
“The requested license transfer by XM-Sirius would eliminate competition in the satellite radio industry, and the combined XM-Sirius companies would be free to raise prices, stifle innovation and reduce program diversity,” explains the attorney general in his letter to Martin.
Amazing how AOL-Time Warner, or Murdock can merge or whatever they want. As soon as Sat. Radio doesn’t greese the palms of politicians enough then it’s not so easy to get things done. Exxon Mobile went through without so much as a blink, and we a re suffering because of it.
Guess myself as a consumer can’t figure out what’s not in my budget and decide weather or not to buy it or not. They have my hands tied with credit card in hand forcing me to pay for the radios and subscriptions. Heaven forbid that I want to be able to hear Baseball with my other sports.
I would now like to think all the “Big Brothers” across the nation that know what I want better than me, and know what’s in my best interest.
