MI: Editorial – State Should Adopt Cox Plan

The site would provide “transparency and accountability,” Cox says, by offering information on Office of the Attorney General expenses, contracts, purchases, tax breaks, salaries and wages, fringe benefits, rents and equipment.

Cox has been touring Michigan with some state lawmakers, urging state House Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford, to allow a vote on legislation to require all expenditures by state government, public schools and intermediate school districts be available online.

It really sounds like a good idea, but Lansing can’t seem to avoid playing at least some politics. Why, we’re not sure.

Cox was in Pontiac recently, flanked by House Republican lawmakers. They emphasized that the issue has bipartisan support, but is being blocked by House leadership.

Dillon noted: “I support the legislation, but we need to have it vetted before we move it.”

He did not say what changes he is recommending.
