The Missouri Senate approved a $22.6 billion state budget Thursday after shooting down efforts to expand dental care for the poor, increase child-care subsidies and pay a court judgment. The overall debate was mild compared with previous years. Appropriations Committee Chairman Gary Nodler, a Joplin Republican, said the debate reflected the fairly hefty increase in state spending. When senators are not fighting over every dollar, the tension level tends to subside, he said.
However, comments became personal on two issues, with senators questioning each other’s motives and trading shots over funding for nursing homes and treatment of state workers who were the victims of discrimination.
