Trenton Democrats lose voter respect when their actions fail to match their promises. When the state tacked on $3 to the motor vehicle registration fee in January 2006, the money was supposed to buy new medical helicopters and result in more state troopers. Yet, during a state Senate budget hearing Monday, it was learned that no helicopters have been purchased or ordered.
The 3,000-member state police force has not increased, and isn’t slated to do so under Gov. Jon Corzine’s tightly woven proposed $33 billion budget.
Instead, the surcharge — about $29 million a year is raised — has been used to buy 250 new state police vehicles, pay for state police salaries and repair the state police’s nine old medical helicopters that are frequently down for maintenance.
