If Iowa Democrats keep this up, you can pretty much guarantee that the newly minted majority they narrowly attained in 2006 will be all gone at the end of this year. Political payback for visually and hearing impaired boys and girls. Classless.
Money that was ultimately allocated to schools for deaf and blind children ignited partisan finger-pointing among lawmakers Thursday.
The children would have gotten about $303,000 less in state money for their schools if House Democrats had gotten away with a political payback scheme, Republicans said.
The Democrats were trying to punish a rural lawmaker who switched parties last year, the lawmaker and a House Republican leader alleged.
But Democratic leaders said the allegation was ridiculous and that the original proposal had nothing to do with political vengeance.
The budget was revised and the money was allocated this week by the Senate after leaders determined there was enough money for the programs.
