South Dakota law should be changed to presume that government records are open to help make sure the public can find out what is going on in state and local government, Sen. Nancy Turbak Berry, D-Watertown, said Thursday.
South Dakota’s current system seems to make government information more easily available to some people than to others, Turbak Berry said at a discussion hosted by the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
“We’ve got a proprietary attitude about government, like those who are elected or those who employed to work in it own it,” Turbak Berry said. “But we’ve got to be reminded that it really belongs to all of us. It’s really about the people.”
