This ain’t politics, no sir. Brad Cowgill was voted into the position by a vote of 10-0. That’s pretty darned unanimous. What’s more – there has already been a national search to fill this position – they couldn’t find anybody qualified – so they chose Cowgill! Is Democrat A.G. Jack Conway really doing the shilling for his Democrat Governor here? Nothing smells like weak political cover like a non-binding advisory opinion. The folks over at Kentucky Politics are really well plugged into what’s happening on this matter.
Beshear demanded last week that the council conduct a nationwide search for a new president, after Attorney General Jack Conway issued an advisory opinion saying the council broke the law by failing to do that when it hired Cowgill for the permanent position.Conway’s opinion, which the governor requested, did not consider the issue of whether Cowgill, 56, had the postsecondary experience to do the job.
Attorney generals’ opinions are not legally binding, except in cases involving open meetings and open records.
Council Chairman John Turner of Lebanon said in a statement that he accepted Cowgill’s resignation “with mixed emotions.”
He noted that Cowgill “took the reins” of the council at a challenging time that included tough budget constraints.
Turner praised Cowgill for his willingness to work with an array of constituents in higher education.
