As much of a love note…

…as a conservative is going to get from the Topeka Capital-Journal (KS) editorial board.  Talking about outgoing Republican Speaker Doug Mays:

…But when Mays' days as speaker of the Kansas House is done — it will be in January, when session is resumed — we give Mays mostly good grades. He was civil, he was a statesman, and he was a person of strong conviction…

…Doug Mays' legacy, we believe, will be felt for years to come.

He had some of us teetering. While we believed the Legislature was foolish to completely ignore the first audit on school funding, we suspicion the Kansas Supreme Court got a little too frisky in mandating specific spending requirements to our legislators — to folks we elect to represent us. And they seemed a little loose with our change, as we committed some $500 million plus in additional school funding to appease them.

It was all a lesson in the balance of government, and Mays believed the balance tilted too heavily toward the judiciary…

We congratulate Mays on his run as speaker. He has given us much to contemplate.
