Republican lawmakers at the state Capitol this morning proposed suspending state taxes on gasoline sales this summer in response to spiking prices at the pumps.
The proposals, though, come a month after the 2008 state budget was adopted, meaning the lost gasoline tax revenues would have to be made up in other ways, such as spending cuts or other tax increases. The calls also come as Republicans in the Senate are desperately seeking to hold onto their slim majority in the upper house in November’s elections.
“We have to provide relief so people can live and support their families,” said Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.
