OH: Dem Governor Says Another Investigation Will Help ‘Restore Confidence’ in AG’s Office

The statements of other public officials will also ensure that the controversy continues. Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, said it seemed there was a double standard when Dann kept his job while others lost theirs. He also said an independent investigation would be helpful in restoring confidence in the office.

And the Ohio Republican Party, after weeks of silence, called for Dann to step down Friday for turning the attorney general’s office into “a raunchy frat pad.”

There are other unanswered questions that could play out in the coming weeks:

— What did Dann know about Gutierrez’s claims to be tied to the mafia?

— Will former Communications Director Leo Jennings, who at one time shared a Dublin apartment with Dann and Gutierrez, face criminal charges for telling another staffer to lie under oath during the investigation? Did he and Gutierrez destroy text messages related to the investigation?

Dann said he believes that “all the possible people against whom disciplinary (action) could have been taken” regarding destroyed text messages have already been disciplined. But he said when an outside investigator is appointed “that investigator can decide what they need and what they need to see.

“We will give them an open book,” he said.
