State Representative Mike Hubbard is the Alabama House Republican Minority Leader. He’s the lead guy when it comes to raising funds to elect more Republicans in the House, and ultimately capture the majority. During the ’06 Election Alabama House Republicans ran a strong campaign and actually increased their numbers in the House. One of the races they engaged in, unsuccessfully sadly for Hubbard now, was the race to unseat then and current Democrat House Speaker Seth Hammett. Republicans ran ads in Hammett’s district that described him as …being part of “the failed policies of the past” and criticized him for using his campaign funds to support other Democrats and “help liberals stay in office.”
What happened after the Election – well payback, some would say. See, Representative Hubbard has served on the influential Education Appropriations Committee – the folks who write Alabama’s state education budget – including for it’s state universities – like Auburn University which is in Hubbard’s district.
Instead of being on the Education Appropriations Committee, Hubbard was assigned to the Government Operations Committee and the Agriculture and Forestry Committee.
Speaker Hammett SWEARS that the change had nothing to do with the ads run by Republicans in his district. He says it was a change that had to be made.
