From the Miami Herald:
There’s a paper party in Broward Wednesday and you’re invited.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum and Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle are hosting a Shred-A-Thon from 9 a.m. to noon at Ocean Bank, 200 NE Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
The purpose: To educate the public about identity theft, which is a significant problem in Florida.
The state ranks No. 5 in the number of reported ID theft cases nationally, according to BSO.
Crooks often sift through garbage, trying to steal identification numbers — Social Security, credit card accounts, e.g. — which allow them to tap into their victim’s finances.
A way to combat that is to shred everything you toss.
Wednesday, BSO, McCollum and Naugle will demonstrate the safe way to dispose of such documents.
