From the New Haven Register:
The state has set aside $200,000 to study the safety of artificial turf athletic fields filled with chopped-up used tires, the state attorney general and the environmental commissioner said.
The money is part of a $750,000 settlement between Connecticut and developers and construction companies that caused damaging mud slides in Montville in 2005.
The state Department of Environmental Protection divided the settlement between two projects — the safety of recycled tires on artificial turf and in gardening mulch, and the electronic monitoring of dams.
The remaining $275,000 will go into the state’s general fund.
State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said he would ask the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven to conduct an independent and thorough study.
