Ex-Kentuckian Backed for Postsecondary Post

Bringing you an update on a story we began covering earlier this year.  To replace the man the governor and Attorney General Conway pushed out:

Skaggs said Crofts’ abilities “seem to perfectly fit what we are looking for,” including having the political and communication skills to work with the state’s public universities and colleges, lawmakers and Gov. Steve Beshear.

The council and Beshear have had a tenuous relationship in recent months following its decision in April to hire former interim president Brad Cowgill as its permanent president.

Beshear strongly opposed that decision, arguing that state law requires the council to conduct a national search for a new president and hire a candidate with postsecondary education experience. State Attorney General Jack Conway issued a nonbinding advisory opinion that said the council should have conducted a national search.

Cowgill announced his resignation soon after, leaving when his interim contract expired April 30. The council immediately appointed a committee charged with conducting a national search and finding a permanent president by year’s end. That committee is selecting a search firm to assist it in finding a new president.
