In one of its final acts Friday, the Legislature passed and sent to the governor a bill repealing Missouri’s campaign contribution limits, which were overwhelmingly supported by voters in 1994.

The House approved the bill on a mostly party-line vote of 83-72 after a brief but contentious debate. The Senate had approved the bill in February.

If Gov. Matt Blunt signs the measure, political candidates could begin accepting unlimited contributions on Aug. 28.

Republicans said the limits are ineffective because rich donors can get around them. Some set up multiple committees to hand out money. Others funnel donations through scores of political party committees.

The current system “can be defined no better than money laundering,” said Rep. Stan Cox, R-Sedalia. “It’s a circuitous route of getting the money somewhere for the purpose of deceiving the people.”
