February 8, 2007 — A state senator wants to fine people $100 for listening to an iPod or talking on a cellphone while crossing the street – but New Yorkers are shrugging off the ham-handed idea.
Sen. Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) said the ban comes in response to two recent pedestrian deaths, including a man struck and killed last month while listening to his iPod in Bergen Beach.
Derrick Torres, a Navy vet crossing West 31st Street while talking on his cellphone yesterday, called the ban unnecessary.
“If I were a government official who wanted to curtail cellphones in public, I'd be looking at libraries, churches, buses, trains and schools,” he said.
