From The State:

Attorney General Henry McMaster is considering a run to succeed Gov. Mark Sanford in 2010, he said Sunday after a North Myrtle Beach campaign stop in support of Horry County Coroner Robert Edge, but isn’t planning a formal decision until after this year’s state and national elections.

“That’s not a ‘no,'” McMaster said when asked if he would run for governor. “I’m giving it very careful consideration.”

McMaster stumped for Edge because he’s “on the team,” he said, citing the coroner’s years of service. But the notion of a McMaster gubernatorial bid was broached during the event and “the crowd was strongly enthusiastic,” said state Rep. Tracy Edge, the coroner’s brother.

“He’s got a good base here in Horry County that would support him if he decided to run in an instant,” Edge said.

McMaster’s tenure as attorney general has been surprisingly bipartisan, Edge said, given that McMaster was a Reagan-appointed federal prosecutor in the early 1980s and chairman of the state Republican Party through the 1990s. McMaster also helped coordinate John McCain’s primary win in South Carolina.
