North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said patients who are ruled mentally ill by the courts should not be able to obtain guns.
A Senate committee is to consider a bill Thursday to keep guns away from those who have been involuntarily committed. Cumberland Sen. Tony Rand offered the bill to require court clerks to enter mental health commitments into a national database, which would provide the information for gun permit background checks.
