CT: Reporter Gives Info To AG; Paper Fires Reporter; Reporter Sues Paper

From The Day:

A former Hartford Courant reporter is suing the newspaper, claiming he was laid off as retaliation for giving Attorney General Richard Blumenthal information in his investigation into Old Saybrook Police Chief Edmund Mosca’s secret spending account, the Mac Fund. According to a lawsuit filed in Hartford Superior Court last month, the company terminated Gary Libow, a 16-year veteran of the paper, because he told Blumenthal one of his sources witnessed then-Lt. Michael Spera carrying several black garbage bags out the rear door of police headquarters around the same time as Blumenthal requested documents related to the fund as part of his investigation.

”The source expressed concern that Lt. Spera may be involved in the removal or shredding of evidence,” according to the lawsuit.

Spera declined to comment Tuesday.

Libow’s editors, Joe O’Brien and Lynne DeLucia, told him that it would be “unwise” to pass any information to Blumenthal, but Libow thought “it would be unethical to conspire to suppress information of a possible corruption” by Spera or the chief, according to the suit.
