AT&T continues to roll out its new telephone, television and Internet service even as the state Department of Public Utility Control continues hearings on whether electrical boxes for the new services are safe and whether nearby property owners were notified properly of their installation.
Company officials said yesterday the telecommunications company will invest about $250 million in its infrastructure in the state this year and create 104 new jobs for local members of the Communications Workers of America union.
The improvements will expand wireless services and the company’s new service known as U-Verse, which includes telephone, high-definition television and Internet services, company officials said in a statement.
“AT&T is making a substantial commitment to Connecticut and continues to deliver significant benefits to consumers and businesses across the state,” Ramona Carlow, president for AT&T in Connecticut, said in a statement.
The new equipment for the U-Verse service came under fire last year when Stamford, Danbury and Bridgeport officials filed a compliant with the DPUC, saying they had not been properly notified and consulted on placement of the new devices, and arguing that the boxes could pose safety hazards.
The equipment boxes, which are about 5 feet tall, are hung from utility poles in public rights of way.
