Now this makes for very interesting politics. A Democrat Pentecostal Minister from the Bronx who breaks with his Democrat colleagues on social issues. This guy is staying to true to his beliefs. Can’t fault him for that – though we bet New York Democrats in Albany can and will. If you don’t toe the party line, get off the rope. From the New York Post:
In a move that clouds Democrats’ hopes of ending four decades of Republican control in the state Senate, family-values Sen. Rubén Díaz Sr. announced yesterday that he’s running on both the Republican and Democratic lines this year.
A Pentecostal minister, Díaz , currently a Bronx Democrat only, is seen as a maverick on religiously sensitive issues, like abortion, school prayer and gay marriage.
He described stem-cell research as “the reincarnation of Dr. Joseph Mengele’s experiments” at a floor debate three years ago.
Díaz credited Republican allies, such as former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno (R-Rensselaer), for coming to his aid this year when Democrats attempted to close a detention center in his district as a cost-cutting move.
His flirtation with the Republican line couldn’t come at a worse time for Democrats.
The party has come within two seats of taking the 62-seat Senate – the last bastion of GOP power in state government – for the first time since 1965.
If elections result in a 31-31 tie or Dems net a slim majority, Díaz could play spoiler and help preserve the GOP’s lock on the majority leader’s post.
