PA: Miss Legislative Reform Pageant and a Pink Pig Hit the Capitol

Political reform activist Gene Stilp brought his trademark pink pig and 11 contestants to the State Capitol rotunda on Monday for a beauty contest of sorts.

The point of the “Miss Legislative Reform” pageant was to push for proposals that are currently stalled in the Legislature, such as mandatory term limits, tighter campaign finance rules and improved public access to government meetings.

The nine female and two male contestants wore formal dresses and tiaras, their sashes marked with titles such as “Miss True Redistricting” and “Miss No Lobbyists’ Gifts.”

Others advocated a constitutional convention, “real” legislative auditing, an end to lame-duck sessions and bans on perks and bonuses.

Stilp was dressed like a circus ringleader. The inflatable pig is his symbol of opposition to legislative pork.

The farce was a reference to a charge in the recently announced legislative bonus investigation. Authorities say the then-top aide to House Democratic Leader Bill DeWeese hired the aide’s beauty queen girlfriend for a job that entailed very little work.

“We mean no harm to that person who was involved,” Stilp said, adding that he believed she had been taken advantage of.
