Some Democrat House staffers, embarrassed over the scandal that envelops their caucus, now tell people they meet outside the Capitol simply that they work for the “state.”
When they tell people where they actually work, they’re often hit with questions or jokes about whether they were involved in the campaign work at taxpayers’ expense that resulted in criminal charges against 12 House Democrats, including a sitting legislator, on July 10.
“Morale is in the toilet,” one staffer told me privately. They are concerned about retribution if they speak out. They worry about whether leadership is monitoring their calls and their e-mail.
