Republican Assemblyman Richard Merkt – another future leader. From Nj.com:
Assemblyman Richard Merkt, a conservative Republican from Morris County and a staunch critic of the policies of Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, has announced he will form an exploratory committee to run for governor.
Merkt, 59, of Mendham Township, said yesterday he will not seek re-election to the Assembly, giving up his seat in the 25th District to concentrate on laying the groundwork for a gubernatorial race that he said “must delve into issues that are crucial to the future health of this state.”
