The battle over the state budget
continues with what some are calling one of the biggest stunts on Tennessee's
Capitol Hill in years.

Either way, Monday at 7:00 a.m.,
House Republican leaders plan to give back some money.

It will go to the first 100
taxpayers who show up with with their grocery receipts at Legislative Plaza.

The money will be in the form of
grocery store rebates on the amount people paid for sales tax on food.

House Republican Leader Glen Casada
says it's all about getting people involved, "It's time we call our state
legislators and say, 'Hey, I want a meaningful sales tax on food — not a few
bucks a month like is being proposed.'"

State lawmakers hope to wrap up
their work this week. Preliminary committee votes on the state budget could
come later Monday.

So how does Tennessee compare with
other states? Virginia has a 2.5% sales tax on food.

Georgia and Louisiana have no state
sales tax on food but food is subject to local sales tax.

Those states are in the majority.
Most states have no sales tax on food.

There’s even a news video you can watch after the jump.
