From LaCrosseTribune:
The polls open today for Wisconsin’s legislative primary, but voting probably isn’t at the top of a lot of people’s to-do lists.
Dozens of local candidates are vying to represent their neighbors and their party at the state Capitol. The ballot doesn’t feature any statewide contests, but the primary will fill a handful of vacant seats. It also could end the careers of about a dozen incumbent lawmakers who face challengers and set up the Democrats’ charge for state Assembly control in November.
The state Senate has no primaries, but 34 Assembly districts have at least one. Many of those races feature multiple candidates. The winner in eight districts has no registered opposition in the November general election, which means the primary survivor will take the seat. Meanwhile, 11 incumbents face a primary challenger, including Marlin Schneider, a Wisconsin Rapids Democrat who took office in 1970, and Hudson Republican Kitty Rhoades, co-chair of the powerful Joint Finance Committee.
