From the Great Falls Tribune:
In his remarks, Schweitzer boasts that he contacted Democratic Party chairs on Montana’s Indian reservations and warned them that Republican poll watchers would be at polling places. He said tribal police subsequently showed up at those polling places and forced poll watchers to leave the reservations.
“We didn’t lose one single vote in there,” Schweitzer said to the applause of convention-goers. Questioned about the story Wednesday, Schweitzer said he made it up to get laughs.
“I was trying to make a point to the group there about how important it is to have elections where people are free to vote without intimidation, as has happened in other states” Schweitzer said. “I was just kind of describing a scenario, and I was just trying to make it humorous.”
Schweitzer also told the group that he called a Butte-Silver Bow elections official and told her to hold off on releasing elections results, which were already late because of a glitch in the counting. In his comments to the convention, Schweitzer implied that he then manipulated the timing of the release of the results to stymie potential calls for a recount in the close race between Tester and incumbent Republican Sen. Conrad Burns.
