Speaking to a room full of journalists and journalism graduates who had returned to celebrate the University of Missouri School of Journalism’s 100th anniversary, Gibbons found favor by agreeing that Missouri should enact a Shield Law that would protect journalists from having to testify in many court cases.
In the Senate, Koster was one of the primary opponents of a Shield Law, and he maintained his opposition in the debate, suggesting that the courts should apply special privileges — such as attorney-client privilege — in very limited cases.
