From PennLive:
House Majority Leader William DeWeese, one of the most powerful figures in the state Legislature, once considered Mike Manzo, his former chief of staff, a prized protege.
In Dauphin County Court, Manzo testified Wednesday that DeWeese knew about an extensive program offering taxpayer-funded bonuses to House Democratic staffers for working on re-election campaigns. And Manzo’s attorney also said Manzo will testify that DeWeese directed certain bonuses to staffers.
Legislative aides routinely work on political campaigns, but they are required by law to do so on their own time. It’s illegal for legislative staffers to do campaign work on the taxpayers’ dime.
