TX: If AG Abbott Moves On, 2 Rs Says They Will Run

Third-term U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, who once worked for the Texas attorney general’s office, confirmed today he’s mulling a 2010 run for the state’s top elected law-enforcement job should incumbent Greg Abbott move on.

If he did commit to running statewide, he would not have to resign his seat, though it might be problematic—or politically ticklish—for him to stay in the House while also stumping the 254 counties.

And then there’s former solicitor general Ted Cruz doing the same thing:

Austin lawyer Ted Cruz, the state’s former solicitor general under Attorney General Greg Abbott, says he’s running for attorney general next year if Abbott chooses not to seek a third term.

Abbott is widely seen as a possible candidate for lieutenant governor or the U.S. Senate should Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison step down to run for governor.
