Martha, Martha, Martha! Nothing beats being outed on something you wanted keep quiet. From the Boston Herald:
Attorney General Martha Coakley has made little secret of her interest in higher office, but she has used a legal but hidden bank account twice to poll voters on whether she would be a viable U.S. Senate candidate.
Coakley has carefully avoided public steps that would make her appear overeager – such as starting a federal campaign committee.
But in 2004, when Sen. John Kerry was the Democratic presidential nominee, and again in November, when Kerry was seen as a potential secretary of state, Coakley tapped the undisclosed account to assess her prospects in a special election. Coakley discussed the federal bank account and the polling after the Associated Press asked her to explain a $25,400 payment from her state campaign committee to a Washington pollster.
