ID: Lawmaker Wants to Outlaw Internet Harassment

A southern Idaho lawmaker wants the state to bolster telephone harassment laws to include annoying, terrifying and threatening Internet communications.

Rep. Steve Hartgen, a Twin Falls Republican, says Idaho should follow Missouri, which updated its laws after a teen’s Internet-related 2006 suicide.

Hartgen told the House State Affairs Committee “the technology has gotten out ahead of our legal structure.” Repeat offenders could face five years in prison, though Hartgen says public figures like legislators would still be fair game for critical blogs and e-mails.
