From the Politico:
While Congress slogs through final action on an economic recovery package, the nation’s governors are getting ready to burn through the federal cash so it gets to their stressed communities in a hurry.
Preparations began within days of President Barack Obama’s signal last fall that he’d seek a major spending package to ease an economic downturn that’s draining state revenues and boosting demands for services at alarming rates.
The estimated gap between projected revenues and expenses in state budgets nationwide for the rest of this fiscal year and the next two is $350 billion, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
